I have never liked the taste of olives. As a kid, I thought they were too briny or sour, and as an adult, that feeling didn’t really change. I couldn’t get past the aftertaste it left and they really overpowered anything else I had been eating.
They say taste changes every 7 years. I can tell you that it may be true as recently (as in the last 24 hours as of this writing) I’ve started eating blue cheese stuffed green olives and I have been pleasantly surprised by their taste!
Or, it could be because I recently contracted Covid-19 and have limited food options in my basement quarantine.
After managing to avoid Covid for the last two and half years, while having to be onsite for work in a middle school and while showing homes to clients, and having some travel obligations both professional and personal, it finally caught up to me. I am fully vaccinated and boosted and the symptoms are incredibly mild. Aside from a sore throat and a little fatigue, I feel pretty good. Other members of the household haven’t tested positive, and since some have other health issues going on, I’m quite thankful for that. This thing has caused a lot of people a lot of heartache over the last two years, so if all I have to deal with is a scratchy throat and a newfound enjoyment of olives, I’ll consider that a victory.
Quarantining in the basement has taught me a few things. I’m lucky to have the space at home to properly isolate myself from others. The basement has a couch, half bath, and a fridge to cover my basic needs for my weeklong “staycation.” The dogs miss me, but they’re surviving. I’m also walking them in the morning before my wife wakes up and spraying down the house and wearing a mask when I have to go up there.
When my quarantine ends, hopefully I’ll be able to jump right back into the mix with my clients and my responsibilities. It’s been weird sitting in isolation for just a few days, but you make do with what you have.
For a few more days I’m here for you in spirit, but I’ll be back out there with you soon.
Until next time,
Dave
